6 years ago I had occasion to commute roughly weekly (about 100 segments in 10 months) on a 700 mile route best served by Alaska Airlines. AS was fairly generous with the rate at which it issued upgrade certificates for its MVP Gold members; but I never really made any concerted effort to make absolutely certain I stayed upgraded. In fact, I found it more useful to trade away those upgrade certs than to use them all, because for a mere 1.5 hour flight, it wasn't worth the effort to me, even though I have rather wide shoulders and care a lot about trying to get upgrades on longer flights. Maybe if I were more of a drinker the free booze would have been more of an appeal.
