My favorite "go out" bag is a bracelet bag I picked up at a boutique in Hayes Valley while I was out in SF. It is a cute black leather bag (reversible with pretty pink/black floral satin lining ) that has a bracelet-sized solid silver hoop at each end. When zipped, it slips on your wrist like a bracelet and the small purse just dangles. I carry it when I attend cocktail socials where I need to be able to hold a glass in one hand and shake hands with the other.
