I just bite the bullet and buy the 500 mile certs. Granted, when I have a schedule where I commute on ~600 mile flights, it just lasts a few weeks, so I'm not buying thousands of dollars' worth of certs. Of course, if the cost starts to get out of hand, I'll forgo the upgrade on one or two flights. But, mostly, I'll buy the certs.
