Filing a damage claim is simply an effective way to let United know that they need to be better behaved. If they aren't reminded, they get more sloppy with that and other luggage handling issues.
And anyway you need knives on the breadboard to cut the pita, and fruit, although not necessarily for the chicken and rice pilaf.
