I guess it's not possible with UA anymore.
This notice needs to be updated. You definitely can check-in at the In-Town Check-In counter on United for flights to the U.S. This has been the case for at least the last 2 years. Will-San, I would just simply call up United in Hong Kong and ask them whether you can check-in the night before.
