I saw that American Express has a promotion where if you buy their Traveler's Cheque card, you get a "free companion airfare". They do it through a company called Airline Promotions, Inc. (API) and you have to buy your original ticket through them. I've also seen that other companies use this promotion too.

Does anyone have experience with using this promotion? Is it worth it? Are API's airfares just so outrageously high that you could fly cheaper by just buying 2 tickets from Orbitz than 1 at API?
