Certainly Ted Drewes has it's fans. Sometimes too many I think as the lines at the Chippewa store can be crazy in summer. Remember if you must go to Ted Drewes that there is also an outlet on South Grand that is less frequented. There is no doubt that in general Ted Drewes has raised the bar of frozen custard here in St. Louis to the status of fine cuisine, so much so that all other frozen custard establishments around the city are held to that, um, "high" standard.
That said, I am more a fan of Mr. Wizard's which has two stores (that I know of), one on Big Bend in Richmond Heights and the other on Page in Overland. I much prefer Mr. Wizard's mixed concretes over Ted Drewes as it seems to me the ingredients are a bit better. I always get the impression that Ted Drewes apple pie custard is nothing more than vanilla frozen custard and broken up apple Tastee Pies from the Wonder Thrift Store. Bleh.
There are numerous other varied frozen custard outlets around St. Louis. More I'd venture than most other metropolitan areas.
