That was my experience too with WP, but YMMV. DL Skymiles members also complained about lack of availability on partners flights.
The only benefit I could see with KLM/AF FB program is that they grant Skyteam top tier "Elite+" status to both their Gold and Elite members (which, as mentioned by another poster, also require less mileage to achieve 40K for Gold, 70K for Plat). NW/CO/ DL only grant Elite+ to their Plats - (however I read somewhere that there where exceptions for US residents, not sure about Canadian residents. Too many complex exceptions based on residencies in my opinion

With elite+ status you have access to any skyteam lounges on the day you fly international with any skyteam partners.
