Crazy/good Happening. 100K un-flown miles credited to account...But Why?
A. Is this what Delta means by "Good goes around?" My friend, who hardly ever flies Delta, calls me yesterday, saying that he has more than 100,000 Skymiles worth of Delta flights credited to his account which he didn't fly. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? How could it be possible? I called Delta special member services last night, and an Indian guy said, this is not possible. Sure, man. I wonder if any of the following are causes:
A1. My friend was mailed the wrong quarterly statement.
A2. The actual flyer accidentally gave Delta my friend's # when booking flights.
A3. My friend has somewhat of a common name and lives in a rather large city. He didn't know his PIN, so he called into Delta. Do you think its more likely that the miles were flown by someone in that city with the same name? Maybe when you call in and don't know your Skymiles #, they look up your name and city and scroll through all the addresses there?
B. OK. Now, clearly Delta is to fault here. My friend is not complaining, but he called me thinking that the miles are mine because we used to live in the same city and have the same first and last name! Who was I to argue with him? I told him I try to get the situation worked out. Do you think there is anyway that I could get Delta to transfer those extra miles from his account to mine (without paying the transfer fee)? What would I have to tell Delta? Ideally, Delta would feel really bad about their mistake and not only agree to credit my account 100K miles, but also leave the miles in my friend's account. However, I'm afraid if I call and ask Delta anything about it, they may end up taking the miles away from my friend and neither of us would see a benefit. What do you recommend? Here are some options:
B1. Ask Delta to freely transfer his miles to my account because somehow their computers mixed up our names. Bad thing is, they may realize I didn't fly these flights either.
B2. Tell Delta that the 2 people are actually the same person (me) and that I somehow had 2 accounts because when I moved, I sat up a new one. Bad thing is, my friend would have to set up a new account, and he flies Delta this week.
B3. Have my friend leave the miles in his account. Tell him that it was too much paperwork/red-tape to transfer the miles. Instead, ask him to redeem the 100K miles for 4 domestic vouchers and tell him to keep 2 for his trouble.
B4. Any other suggestions?
Thanks.
