At Stanford Mall - Max's Opera House - Huge menu selections, huge servings (easy to share a couple of appetizers) - kind of "Jewish New York deli" menu but mind bogglingly huge selection

Across the road from Stanford Mall (behind Crate and Barrel) - California Cafe (menu changes daily but there are some standard items http://www.californiacafe.com/palo_alto.php click on the bottom to see a sample menu)

Not a big fan of Strait's Cafe - I find the portions small and the prices high although I will agree that it's tastey

San Jose - E&O Trading Company - on 1st st at San Fernando (walking distance from the Tech Museum, I believe) - Tastey Asian Fusion

Or - just across the parking lot on 2nd st - Hawg's Seafood - very affordable seafood/pasta (you can even get half portions!)
