So, you would say this person is wrong, and being on the DM early (i.e. EasyCheckin) IS good for upgrades? What else is it good for?

It would definitely help for upgrades, but I don't think it helps for VDB. The upgrade list is processed at the gate by status. If several passengers have the same status, the upgrade list is then processed in order of the time they were added to the DM list. I think VDB is processed at the gate in the order you volunteered.
