One of my biggest pet peeves in the world of customer service - which the air travel industry ends up being the biggest manager of - is the "little white lie".
Honestly, I dont know why airline staff either say or are trained to say things like "you will have your bags tonight". It almost always ends up being wrong, and you then end up having lied to people. While a sucky answer, I prefer the "we have no clue where your bags are, and you'll be the first to know when they show up - even before our computer".
Similar variants:
"We're #100 in line for takeoff/landing - should only be 5-10 more minutes."
"Our new Regional Jets will have FC seating".
"We value your business".
