I've always thought that counting additional miles towards next year's status hunt makes a whole lot of sense. If someone flies 150K in one year, why not make them platinum an extra year? If they don't fly much the following year, you've lost basically nothing, but you do increase the odds of retaining their loyalty if their travel picks up again in subsequent years.
