Agree with above poster. Ann Arbor is as he suggests as well as easier to get to and safer, Detroit itself isn't at all nice. As for something to do, Ann Arbor has a few museums and some wonderful second hand bookshops (the Dawn Treader is worth a look) but the one that I would say is a must see in that part of the world is the Henry Ford Museum. It's a tribute to all things American and I loved it
