I've had nothing but excellent service recently on my transpac flights. I've even had FAs give me a crew meal when it was apparent I didn't particularly like my meal.
They've always gone around and mentioned that people should close the shades. It wouldn't surprise me if people complaining about this resulted in FAs getting much stricter about it.
As for the liquor, I think that the flight wasn't catered properly.
If I were to write a complaint letter, I wouldn't mention the FAs asking for your wife's passport to verify her age. Seems like a reasonable request and I've seen it happen before.
