Yeah, but with varying circumstances.
First, my "tips to always do on ANY flight that also help with an unexpected overnight"":
BEST TIP FIRST: If you are not on an extremely limited budget as I often am, rent a car and sleep in it. Warning, PT Cruisers are soooo uncomfortable!
1) I travel "dressed" but in comfortable, machine-washable clothes.(Yes, I know there is always a thread somewhere on this) Don't have to worry about what is on the floor where I am sleeping! Plus, I have long pants on, shoes with socks and a sweater. ALWAYS. I can always take something off, so ta speak.
2) I just find a gate where a flight doesnt leave until 9am and lay down on the floor (unless I luck into a soft bench) with my soft black backpack as a pillow(one of my standard carryons with soft-sided food container in it, etc.) and my softsided briefcase as a "hug me" pillow. (laptop has been stowed by this time in the backpack.)
3) Set my clock(now use my phone) that I keep in carry-on.
4) Pull out blinders and earplugs. They are my best ideas on planes, too.
5) If planning on overnighting I take melatonin to help me sleep. Always have that and other "freq. use" meds in my carry-on.
6) Put my phone, watch and belt in my shoes and put my shoes between me and the wall.
7) If I know that I am going to be overnighting (I did a MR recently IAD-MCO and never left airside... in the am the UA GA couldn't believe that I didn't have a boarding pass, "How did you get through security!??"), I take a disposable pillow and sheet with me. These are items that I bought at Goodwill, cleaned and don't mind if I leave them somewhere. The sheet can go over and under and say, "I am serious about sleeping". Noone has ever parked near me in this case.
8) Also, If I know that I am going to be overnighting, I take sweatpants and a sweatshirt, etc. Change in the men's room and then neatly lay my clothes out next to me over a chair back.
9) The best money I ever spent, next to an airport card for my laptop, was a club membership. After sleeping in the airport like a heathen, it is nice to wash-up in the club and have a cuppa cuppa with a biscotti!
It is not the best but it can save a couple hours of sleep time and a bunch of $$!
