For a silver elite, how easy will it be to get an upgrade?

Now, as the NW loyalist that I am, switch to NW and give them all your money. 'Cuz they're gonna need it.
I have flown NW in the past (last year) and I had no problems with them. I very much liked flying with them (and I absolutely LOVED MSP airport!!!).

I do have one concern that I hope someone can answer. Last time I flew AA the person sitting next to me warned me that if AA goes bankrupt then I could lose my miles I have with them. So, if NW does go bankrupt will I keep my miles I have with them, or are they going to zero my account out? If I do decide on changing to NW I will transfer my elite status from AA to NW, then I can be a silver elite.

Thanks for the help and advice.
