There are very few things that I can do by sitting down and giving it a shot. I need instruction and practice. Most everyone else is the same.

The need for training and practice is especially true about flying. No one really wants to hire or fly with the 'natural'. There are people who are born to be a pilot, but what you really want is someone who can learn to work with others. Everytime I hear someone say or see them write 'it takes a long time to get the skill to be an airline pilot'. I think of WW2 where Canada took young men and women from anywhere, then guessed at their aptitude and then trained them to be pilots in a very short time. The vast majority of these people (who lived) returned to jobs that were in no way associated with aviation even though they did a fine job as pilots when it was needed.

Flying is about discipline and rote memorization. Anyone who has these two attributes stands a good chance of being a pilot. The rest is just waiting for your senority number to come around.
