And FWIW, I seriously doubt the OP will get away with it very easily. If he's lucky the flight will be overbooked and he can go for the VDB.
PS - and since when is it cheaper to fly to/from SNA than LAX? I've made 1K flying between IAD and the LA area, and I've never seen it cheaper to go to SNA. I wish...
