Definitely, happens all the time. They just put you on the next flight, even changing the routing if necessary.
If you miss the YUL-YYZ-YYC flight, there is the nonstop AC187 which leaves at 2pm and gets in about half an hour after your original arrival time. I would consider buying the family lunch at YUL to be your worst case scenario if you miss the CNX.
