Well, I'm in the monority of the responses you've received, but we didn't care
much for the city at all. On a long trip all over Scandinavia last summer it was our least favorite place; very touristy, crowded, and other than the harbour area, not much to see. We did use it as a base for what they call the "Norway in a Nutshell" route, which we did enjoy. The trip up the fjords to Balestrand is spectacular, and staying overnight there at the Kvikne's Hotel was just lovely. The Flam Railway ride was gorgeous(and very short!); the train from Myrdal to Oslo was excruciatingly long, and mostly pretty boring. If you were going to do it, I'd fly from wherever to Bergen, go up to Balestrand, and just reverse the trip back to Bergen and fly out.
