Continuing to give it away as they are currently doing is not going to generate any improvements IMO.
Some random thoughts:
1) Embarrassing is exactly what DL FC is. I obtained a transcon DL F ticket for an older relative recently and I felt embarrassed afterwards when I realized that she probably expected some kind of "service". A wider seat, G&T and snack tray is economy plus at best! First class my ....
2) Many posts later, I still do not see any evidence that the proposal as it stands would increase revenue!
3) If the proposal *was* implemented I suspect I would drift further away from DL. I already qualified for PM 2006 and (like others) I'm tempted to cut DL back to about 75k MQMs. This proposal certainly wouldn't increase my loyalty so what DL gains from anybody else has to first repay the business that DL would lose from the likes of me.
4) Delta apparently reckons they can make more money with Song JFK-LAX than with a wide body and decent FC service. Any time somebody talks about DL improving FC I think about Song and that makes me think that DL's idea of FC is that it should disappear and probably be replaced by a cross between Song and intra-European "business" class. On 2-3 hour trips that might not be so bad - *if* they get it right. I think anybody who wants the current FC seats can expect to pay the appropriate multiplier on the ticket cost to account for the extra space that those seats take.
