If it is all part of one booking made together with luggage checked through, then I agree it sounds odd, however if booked separately then they are within rights (though usually sympathetic if flights are not full). It depends where booked, what sort of ticket etc to determine if BA did the right thing or not.
All one ticket/itinerary, the ticket itself was over $2000.
She said "they were very unhelpful. There was a lot of room on the late afternoon nonstop and United booked me on it but BA wouldn't accept the booking". She also said that "They would not take the ticket as they are not in the star alliance. The clerk said the ticket was good only for the flt I missed so, too bad."
She's a seasoned traveler and was more surprised than angry. They didn't even offer to sell her a ticket on the later flight, she said they seemed "more interested in getting rid of me."
