Travelling with a dSLR

I upgraded to a digital SLR camera a few weeks ago (Nikon D70). With my old camera (Canon Powershot A80), I could just drop it in my pocket or my laptop case and no worries. However, the D70 body is big, and the lenses (an 18-70mm and a 70-300mm), filters, etc take up a lot of space. I got a nice bag at Frys (Lowepro EX-180) that holds everything, and is cushioned pretty well, but it's big.

I anticipate travelling with this setup quite a bit, and I'm not sure what the best way to carry everything is. I normally travel with a laptop bag and either a rollaboard (shorter trips) or a larger duffle/suitcase (checked) for longer trips.

What are your strategies for travelling with a decent amount of camera equipment? I really don't want to check the camera bag, I'm afraid it will go missing or get broken. I don't mind putting it inside of the carryon, but then it takes up a lot of space.

Thanks!
