I think you're right... since AMS has a lot of weed/coke/ecstacy around, by gauging your reactions to those questions, I suspect he's seeing if you really were up to anything else on your way back.
I'm sorta used to it driving from Mexico back here, get the same question 4 times.. it can get irritating but they wanna hear if you can't get your story straight. Be patient, be calm... because if you're not, it can be a long afternoon in secondary.
