Hmm, after I posted the above message it occurred to me why I might have got those upgrades when many others did not have as good luck on this route as I did.
When I got my upgrades as a Silver I got them when I checked in at a city other than EWR or LAX and was connecting on to this route. Since upgrades were handed out on a first-come first-served basis on the day of the flight
irregardless of status, I probably got my upgrade as a Silver even while Platinums who checked in at EWR/LAX sat in the back.
Of course, this supposedly can't happen anymore since EUA now runs on the day of the flight. (It used to only run at the Plat/Gold/Silver upgrade windows.)

Sorry to be OT- but this statement of mine was inaccurate too- I also rode in a BF cabin on EWR-IAH and EWR-FLL
