Unhappy Phones should be USB devices.
While I know the answer, I think the better question is why phones aren't made with standard USB 2.0 connections instead of the troublesome proprietary ones we're stuck with now.

Unfortunately, the greed of the phone mfgrs seems to trump the need of a universal interface.
