I'm asking because I have this situation coming up in Sept- long haul on another carrier then an LHR connection to a short haul on bmi. The bmi ticket is a separate one-way ticket (I'm traveling home directly from LHR.)
Looks like the problem will be coming back from Europe when you originate on BD, and connect to another carrier over the Atlantic. Sounds like it's only BD refusing to interline the bags. It will still work the other way around ... for now.
