I think this is one major drawback with EUA.

It has happened to me a few times. Once there was even empty F seats on IAH to MSY and I didn't get upgrade because LAX to IAH was oversold. (It was LAX- MSY direct one-stop).

However, I do not miss staying up till midnight to call for upgrades on those pre-EUA days.
