Cingular/ATT Blackberry connection in Australia

I just arrived in Australia via HKG and BKK. Had no problems using blackberry 7280 in HKG and BKK - automatically connected both voice and data.

Here I am automatically being connected to Optus. But it says Data Connection Refused.

When I try to manually select a network, at first I only got Optus, but then got Vodafone and connected OK both voice and data. Telstra never comes up. Problem is Vodafone coverage is not as good as Optus and I cannot get Vodafone reception at my parents' house where we are staying (Brighton, MEL, VIC).

I called Cingular and they said account in good standing (d'uh cause everything worked in BKK and HKG) and no reason I shouldn't be able to roam on Optus or Vodafone or Telstra.

Any ideas how to fix this? Cingular CSR didn't seem to know much other than reading the manual.
