Marc, I think the reason is that there are 2 busses (A320-A321)that supply power to the seats. Each bus is 15 amps. A laptop pulls about .8 amps, if you had a standard plug, people would start to plug all sorts of things in, I have seen this happen. The circuit breakers keep popping.
I am not sure how much power is available to the seats in an A330. I will check it out.
LH AND NW both have 110 at the seat- and LH has it in their "old" 747 J/C class configuration which is at LEAST 10 years old- I don't know what you have seen people plug into the outlets- I am scared to ask now! On my flights- laptops, PDA's, or people charging their (turned OFF) cell phones. I seem to recall CP had the adaptors to lend out to customers- perhaps this is where some turn up on AC planes. Oh, and for the record shore9, there is no London Drugs here in Italy either.
