Many similarities, but some differences. If you hold an F ticket you can switch to any flight that has just one open seat-- even if the only available seat is in F. The full-Y fare would not automatically entitle you to that seat and, as someone mentioned above, if you end up on a different carrier, your F ticket will be treated differently than a very expensive Y ticket.
