Old TriStars don't die, they just go to Portugal
I was in Kingston the other day with the airport management. The only heavy jets they get are the A340 from Air Jamaica and the 777 from BA with the odd 747 every now and then.
I asked about DC10s, MD 11s and Tristars as they had a similar safety issue that I was examining. No, never. (start dead parrot sketch types of denial at this point).
As we drove around the ramp about 10 minutes later, what drops out of the sky but a Portuguese Tristar filling in for the A340 that went tech. Spottie wins again.
If you go to LIS then there are lots of L1011s around waiting to fill in for broken big aircraft. I think that the Tampa was a little different with the clash of dusking and broken aircraft. Many pax were rerouted on other BA services, if a fuss was made.
Now, if you want to fly on a Tristar specifically, join the RAF!
