Airpass is the most profitable product that AA sells. In return you get super-premium, better than F service on the ground. For example at LAX there is a separate Airpass/EXP check-in, much faster than using the F check-in. Almost always you can buy a point-to-point fare that is cheaper than Airpass (but not always), so cost saving is not the reason to buy Airpass -- service is. Only you can decide how much that is worth (based on travel pattern). I have never used Airpass, but I do know that AA really does give it extra special service (perhaps to the point of letting you book oversold flights and they buy someone for the bump).
