the main reason i was surprised about the fare changes is that the flight was to a out of the way place that I wouldn't imagine would be that popular.
All I did was call NW reservations or maybe the elite hotline...I'm not sure which. But if it's within 24 hours of you buying your ticket, they will do it. It's part of the
Customers first policy on the website.
One of the times I did this was for a flight between Columbus, Ohio and Buffalo, NY, which is ridiculous because it would almost take the same amount of time to drive. It priced at something over $280, and then it went down to about $160 or so.
