Exactly. So the trick is to find something wrong with the flight you're on. This happened to me once when ticketed on SFO-BWI.

Me (to agent working IAD flight): "Can I get on this flight?"
Agent: "Sorry, Sir, your ticket is to BWI."
Me: "Ok, thanks."

(15 minutes later, BWI is posted as delayed)

Me (to the same agent): "Now my Baltimore flight is delayed, and I really need to get back East. Can I get on this flight now?"
Agent (verifies delayed status of BWI flight): "Window or aisle, Sir?"
