Planning an award trip from Washington DC to BKK for January 2006.

I have a choice between ANA via NRT or UAL via ORD and NRT. Comparisons of service would be helpful.

I'm tempted to go with ANA to eliminate the ORD connection. However, I understand that the return flight on ANA would be non-changeable (not even for a fee) once we're on the ground, which makes me uncomfortable should an emergency arise. Has anyone had experience with this rule?

Also, should I be considering the possibility of a UAL liquidation in the next 6 months?
