Since UA closed the CTO's here in Chicago, I have always received my vouchers for the reduction in airfare in the mail. Never needed to go to the airport. I just called up the 1K or UGS line, have them refare it and then have them issue the voucher via regular mail. Haven't had a problem yet.
I do not have any problem getting a voucher for the airfare difference if the ticket is issued here in the U.S. I had a very difficult time when the ticket was issued outside of U.S. in non-U.S. dollar currency.
