I've always presented them to a ticket counter in the US. I agree that the ticket counter staff at SYD are less than helpful. They are either not there, or busy with last minute ticketing for the day's flights, and not willing to think about anything else.

Not very helpful I'm afraid. Maybe you can give it to someone to present at a US ticket counter if you dont want to mail it.
