If the OP's BF has a Online EasyCheckin BP for his 3:00 pm flight, he can bypass the lines at the check-in counters and head straight to the gate for the 5:00 pm flight to be added to the DM. I personally prefer to head for the RCC or find a nice GA who just finished closing out a flight to add me to my targeted flight's DM.
If he misses his scheduled flight without first checking in online, the only way for him to get past TSA is to wait in line at the check-in counters to have his PNR revived by a check-in agent in order to get a DM card. EasyCheckin kiosks will not allow him to do this.
