I believe if you apply online, you are opening up another account and there is be an inquiry into your credit report. You should rather call up CS and ask to upgrade your existing account, therefore avoiding a credit inquiry and the regular wait period. My American Express Charge account has been progressively upgraded over my lifetime as a member, and there were no credit checks... rather I received a replacement card from my old account and everything just transfers over.
