Long haul and short haul allowances
Yes, it does transfer from long haul onto short.
I find it interesting that Ryanair and Easyjet now allow you to carry what you like "within reason" and BA are getting tough on 7kgs. I think if you read the IATA regulations you will find that you are allowed to take the bag, handbag, overcoat, binoculars, camera, umbrella, walking stick and "sufficient in-flight reading material". Well, this traveller considers that (i) as not a cross dresser that the handbag allowance is sexist, I will take a bigger briefcase thankyou, (ii) I do not carry an overcoat, merely a shower mac rolled up in the briefcase (iii) binoculars, camera are in the briefcase (iv) no need for umbrella and walking stick (v) the work that is in my briefcase consistitutes in-flight reading material.
There are two issues, firstly weight and secondly volume. My briefcase fits under the seat in-front, if I have to. Therefore, as this is "personal space" and not shared space, this is not an issue. If BA want to use this space more effectively, fine, just put the lifejackets overhead and not underneath, your fault BA! Then the weight issue. Why do I get an allowance of 20kg plus 7 kg plus IATA and then you complain if I get a 10kg handbaggage weight with no hold baggage?
The weight issue is related to maximum take off weight, balance and debris in the event of an accident. 1. if the airline is worried about max take off mass authorised for the conditions on the day, weigh the bag. I have no objection, it is me that has to carry it through the BAA airports with no little trolley for it. 2. Balance. well if you have weighed it and you know where I am sitting, it is not exactly difficult to do the maths, if you say it is, you should have your AOC withdrawn as incompetent! 3. The overhead bins are stressed for more than the 7kg per pax limit, try reading the label! What about the underseat limit, I don't know what it is but there must be one on the certificate!
I do hope that all crew bags are removed from the overhead lockers if they exceed 7kg if you are going to play the safety game.
