Asking if everything is OK

It has always been my policy when confronted by SARCASM from a service person to ask if everything is okay. Geez you just might find out that things are really not going well for that person and since you already sense that they do have something going on it seems to me the polite thing to do as a human being is to inquire.

Most who are complaining in this thread have probably never received notice that the company you use to work for is going to do less with less and will not include you. When it happened to me and someone inquired as they noticed that I seemed preoccupied it invariably changed the tempo of the conversation immediately. Fact of the matter some of the most sympathetic comments came from FAs during travels that I had during that recent period. Go figure.

Things eventually worked out for me (one door closed & another opened) as I was able to take advantage of an early retirement opportunity. But if you had entered my office during that period of uncertainty than it was hit or miss what mood you were going to find me in at the moment. Those whom ended up with a pleasant experience were those whom inquired as to what was on my mind or how things were going and for a moment postponed their expectations of why they had entered the office. YMMV
The other thing about asking that question is that if someone isn't aware of their state of mind, it gives them immediate feedback regarding how they are coming across. And when they are able to vent or apologize for noticing that they are venting at customers they may be able to shift their attitude. But I can imagine it isn't fun to encounter demoralized employees.
