Why would you limit yourself to the overseas segment for the miles upgrade? I'd upgrade the permissible up-to-three AFAIK segments, as long as they are available at the time of booking and keep it all easy... I think you could do it your way as well, though that might work for a four or five segment one-way trip. See the upgrade table on aa.com.
