I think it depends.

Ever sat in Bryant Park in Manhattan using your Wireless Laptop before?

I am sure that area is easily the size of a typical cellular phone cell...although, granted, some cellular phone base stations can cover many miles, almost curve of the earth in limitation.

Anyone ever sailed out of Miami on a cruise ship to find their cell phone still working up to an hour out of port until the high rises disappear out of sight? Easily a few miles straight line coverage....
