Certificates can only used by those who have status. Basics cannot use them unless they have been upgraded by a status companion.

(After all, SWU's are distributed with status packages, so you must attain status to get SWU's -- not sure if you and/or your friend had considered this logic... plus it's well stated on the Aeroplan site, where your friend can look).
