TORONTO, June 30 /CNW/ - The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA),
which manages Toronto Pearson International Airport, has issued a Request for
Proposal (RFP) to award new limousine licences at the airport. This process is
underway to ensure an adequate level of limousine service at Toronto Pearson.
Certain drivers who operate taxis or limousines at the airport have taken
issue with the manner in which the GTAA is conducting the RFP and have
attempted to obstruct this process. They first conducted demonstrations
obstructing traffic and interfering with airport operations. More recently
they have commenced a court action and have sought an injunction preventing
the completion of the RFP process.
At a court hearing, the GTAA and the group of drivers involved have
agreed to adjourn the matter for a hearing which has been set for July 25th.
This will allow sufficient time for both parties to prepare appropriate
arguments.
The RFP will close as originally anticipated at 3:00 p.m. today June 30,
2005. Evaluations of the submissions will begin immediately and negotiations
with successful proponents will follow. The RFP anticipated approximately
eight weeks for that process, which means the GTAA will be in a position to
award licences in late August. The GTAA has assured the court that no licences
will be issued prior to August 1, 2005.
The court injunction obtained by the GTAA on June 22, 2005 restricting
the manner of driver demonstrations at Toronto Pearson continues to be in
effect.
