Dave, for a last-minute trip to NYC, you might want to try Travelocity. It does require a hotel for the whoe stay, but (unlike Expedia) it allows you to specify a hotel in a different city than the destination airport. Not sure what the allowed range is. But adding a few hotel nights in Scranton, PA has got to be cheaper than a hotel room in the Big Apple.
