I once tried the anti-jet-lag diet (the one that alternates high-protein, high calorie days with low-protein, low calorie days prior to departure), and experienced what I considered to be a highly successful result. I didn't bother with a control run (no special diet), but compared my jet-lag experience with the diet going east to my westward return without the diet. Since it's typical to experience worse jet-lag going east than going west, and since my jet lag was pronounced after the westbound return with no diet, I figured I had good evidence that the diet worked on eastbound travel. I used the diet on several subsequent trips with similar results.

Then I read about the flashlight-behind-the-knees trick (I know it sounds outlandish if you haven't heard of it, but it was based on university research and some fairly solid scientific reasoning), so I tried that in place of the diet. The diet is pretty inconvenient, and had caused some stomach irritability and headaches for me, and the flashlight trick promised to do away with these unpleasantries.

Well, several trips with the flashlight trick also left me feeling fine upon arrival in Europe from the U.S.

And then one time, my flashlight batteries died during the night (when the exposure is required for the procedure to work). I had no choice but to make the trip without any protection at all.

Once again, I experienced very little jet lag from the eastbound flight.

So now I don't do anything (besides getting at least 4 hours sleep with half an Ambien pill, and staying awake and active until local bedtime upon arrival), and I've finally concluded that my body usually does not experience severe jet lag going east, and all my complicated jet lag remedies were a waste of effort and suffering.

Your experience, of course, may differ dramatically.
