It all depends on where you are going and how long you are staying in that country. You need a UNLOCKED GSM phone. I have a phone, rental is just to expensive, anyway I travel about once a month overseas. You will need to provide more details on your stay. I have a HOP card for countries if I am staying for one day or for transiting. If I am staying I buy a local sim for that country. I stay about a week or two in each country. I then send an email message or call home with the number. My company and familiy can get in touch with me if need be. I have had no problems with this way of staying in touch. I hope this helps.
